Holiday Project #1: Bunting Making :)

It's Christmas Day! :) Another year has passed and here we are once again celebrating the birth of Jesus on this special day with family and friends. Christmas is all about Jesus!.. with a side of gift-giving, feasting and singing carols :)

This year, I decided to get set on a little holiday project and double it as a Christmas present for some of my friends as well. I have noticed buntings have been quite popular in decor that looks good in any room and seemed easy enough to make (after watching a tutorial on youtube). So here is a little step by step in how I made them :)

I took a trip to Spotlight one day and picked out some fabrics. I wasn't sure what colour theme to go on but after seeing a pink and a blue floral piece of fabric in a scrap basket that I thought was perfect, I decided to go with those two colours. With the help of my sister, I chose three other types of material that I thought would go well with the pink and blue floral. There were also another floral piece that I found at home which I decided to use as well. And then it was all about mixing and matching!

Scissors, ruler, marker and pins - all that is needed to cut out all the triangles! The fabric also needed to be folded over so that each triangle would have two sides. For this bunting, each triangle was 18cm (apex to base) and 17cm wide.

Each string/line didn't need to be that long, so I decided to put a total of 12-14 triangles on each line and mix and match all the triangle pieces into the patterns I liked.

And then the sewing begins :) Moments like these, I am glad I took home economics in high school and all the knowledge came flooding back..I even remembered to flip the two sides of the triangles back to front so that the good side is facing each other before sewing..that way when I flip it back inside out, the good sides will be showing on the outside :D

After all the triangles were sewed together and flipped inside out to reveal the good sides, it was time to sew it all together with some bias binding tape (this stuff is expensive...there is a tutorial of how to make some yourself here but thought it was too much effort) and leaving about a 1.5cm gap between each triangle.

And voila! The lighting makes it a bit harder to see the true colours but this one is the pink floral one mixed with the dark red and pink/white stripes :)

It was so difficult deciding how to wrap them up but I finally settled on using some unused scrap book paper and brown string. I hope they like it! :)
