The Cornerstore Cafe | Toowong

It's the weekend! There have been two things that I have been wanting to do: eat the waffles at the Cornerstore Cafe and visit the World Photo Press. Both of these end by the end of the month/season (i.e in two days), so I made it my mission to accomplish both of these things today.

The Cornerstore Cafe is a quaint and home-y place in Toowong with the most delightful herb garden gracing the posterior side of the cafe. And it was this herb garden in which we had to wait (for around 15 minutes) before being seated inside because it was just so busy this morning.

There was a slight drawback on the waffles - the Belgian waffles with apple crumble, bacon crumbs and vanilla ice cream that I was anticipating weren't on the menu any more (they had already changed to their Spring menu). In its place were tiramisu waffles with mascarpone ice cream, chocolate crumb and strawberries, which still did its job in filling the waffle shaped hole in my heart. We also ordered some herb baked field mushrooms with poached eggs, pate, and parmesan cheese on bruschetta which really made the meal and left us happily sated.

Part two of my mission was over at the Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm for the Word Press Photo. This is an annual exhibition/competition that showcases some of the best photojournalism during the past year. There are several categories including portraits, nature, world news, daily life and contemporary issues. There were many stories that I didn't know happened/were happening in the world - like public executions in Iran, riots and protests in Istanbul and Ukraine, while others were stories that I had heard about on the news but it was nothing like being confronted by these events from a first person point of view. And to think that these photos were taken by journalists who were willing to place themselves in the middle of a war zone or an Ebola infested village just so they can tell the rest of the world a story. It's quite unbelievable really.
(You can see most of the entries on their website! Worth checking out and also good for catching up with contemporary issues and world news).

  1. Pity you missed out on the apple bacon waffles! (But super easy to make at home so just whip it up when you next get a craving!) I pass the Cornerstore Cafe all the time but I've never visited because I didn't hear mindblowing raves about it- it's always bustling though, so it obviously has a steady following.
The World Press Photo contest sounds so interesting! I might take a detour one Saturday and have a look.

PS: Love your new blog banner! I love the look of typography/brush lettering/modern calligraphy and have been meaning to acquire a copic or two! Maybe even a Floralovely modern calligraphy workshop, at some point!

    1. Yeah, the Cornerstore is quite lovely to sit at but the food is just like every other cafe in my opinion.
The World Press Photo actually finished last weekend! Which is why I had to make a quick decision to go before it ended. But there is always next year :)

P.S Thanks! :) If you ever need a buddy for the calligraphy workshop, you know who to call ;) haha
