Last night, my primary school best friend celebrated her 21st birthday at Gerard's Bistro. After hearing about how it was rated as one of Brisbane's top restaurants and having had the chef make a guest appearance on Masterchef last week, I was pretty keen to see if it lived up to its high reputation.
Since we had quite a big group of people, we ordered from a set menu - which included:
Entree:
"Organic house bread with smoked Pepe Saya butter
Bekka wings, kidhk yogurt, rose
Mains:
'Mujuddara' - braised lentils and rice with caramelised onion and cumin
Fried cauliflower, pomegranate and ras el hanout
Slow roasted full blood wagyu brisket with seasonal accompaniments (which were some pickled vegetables, mint leaves/pomegranate and yoghurt)"
It all sounds very fancy and I guess it was pretty fancy indeed. The flavours were unique and I'm not even sure exactly of what the cuisine is but there are influences from Southern Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. My personal favourites were the slow cooked wagyu, cauliflower and the dessert - which was a mandarin sorbet with some sort of white foam.
It was a pretty cool night to be seated outside but thankfully there was a heater so we could enjoy the dinner and conversation in some warmth and comfort. Overall, it was a pretty fun night - making some new friends, trying a cuisine I haven't tried before, riding in a convertible and most specially, being able to celebrate the birthday of a very dear friend.
