<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I wanted to take a slight break from posting about Europe, to say a few words about something that I have been thinking more and more about. Over the past year or so, I have become more aware of brands advertising themselves as being eco-friendly, using bio-degradable materials, zero-waste and fair trade. It got me thinking about my own choice and use of products. For a long time, I would buy things that I liked based on its cheap price. But most of the time, those products don't last me very long because I often change my mind about the quality or it just falls apart quickly because of its cheap material. I would buy products that aren't tested on animals here and there and try my best to recycle but I never really thought about it too much.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Issues such as fair trade, unfair 'next-to-nothing' wages, unsafe working conditions, pollution and animal cruelty have all been voiced out and have been ongoing issues in retail. Many brands have been called out already for being 'unethical' but there are so many brands (especially fast-fashion brands) that are still unknown for how they make their products. </span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Before I start sounding like an extreme environmental activist, I just wanted to put it out there that I am still learning about all these things and I still make occasional purchases at fast-fashion stores. After all, they’re hard to avoid. It’s going to be tough cutting ties with them and I can’t say that I will ever be 100% environmentally friendly in all my ways. But often, you start small and it’s the little things count. And the little things can accumulate into bigger things (if everyone contributes a little bit).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I thought I could make a start by being more aware of what I am 'consuming' as a shopper. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Whenever I go shopping now, it’s always at the back of my mind to know the brand I’m buying from a bit more. Recently, I found this app called ‘Good On You’. It's an app that tells you what's behind their brand -what they stand for in terms of making their products. It rates the brand (typically a fashion brand) on how ethical it is and tells you how the brand does in ‘environmental impact’, ‘labour conditions’, ‘animal welfare’. For example, I love shopping at Zara and I know many other people do. But how ethical is it? In terms of ‘environmental impact’: it’s a start. Zara is a part of several initiatives to reduce their carbon emission, eliminate hazardous chemicals and to be more sustainable overall, but it is still a brand that is built on fast-fashion. It’s ‘labour conditions’ is good (according to the 2017 Ethical Fashion Report) as they have good transparency of their processes and supports ‘worker empowerment’. Their ‘animal welfare’ rating is ‘it’s a start’ since they do use some animal products in their clothing like leather, down and wool.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">It has been interesting looking up all the brands that I have or still buy from and seeing how they rate according to the three categories. It’s often disappointing to see a brand that I love fall short of standards and not being ethical or sustainable at all. </span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I've also taken more time to think about how much I will use this product before buying it, and whether it's recyclable and made well enough to last me years. I've been guilty of buying things without thinking many times and those products end up sitting in my room un-used and gone to waste. "Think before you buy" is probably a good mantra to have (#notetoself).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I've also been guilty of using the excuse "it's just too expensive" when trying to be more sustainable...because it often is. But if it means biting the bullet and investing in more expensive but sustainable clothing and reducing fast disposable fashion items in my wardrobe, then so be it. (But man, is it going to be hard). In saying that, not all expensive brands and products are eco-friendly and sustainable – it’s still important to check and know what you’re buying yourself into.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I love finding small businesses with good ethics these days. I discovered the Pela Case the other day (after being bombarded with its ads on Instagram). Their story is that they are a company that aims to reduce plastic waste, alleviate our use of non-reusable materials and educate people on more sustainable alternatives. And so they created a phone case that uses recycled and bio-degradable materials, is free from harmful chemicals like BPA, uses low impact manufacturing…but is still very functional and looks nice! You can check it out <a href="https://pelacase.com/">here</a>.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Another small step is to start using canvas or re-useable plastic bags when grocery shopping. The QLD government is going to roll out a ban of plastic bags in all retail stores from July this year. This is a huge step, and good on us. I know that sometimes it’s just easier when the plastic bags are there for you and it’s inconvenient and cumbersome when you have to lug everything back to your car or pay for a plastic bag. But I hope the inconvenience will encourage people start being more proactive in using more sustainable options.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #222222; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">These are just some of the little things that I’ve started to do and think about. I’m excited to learn more about sustainable alternatives and make more small changes to the way I purchase and use things. All change starts with recognition of the issue and I hope this post has been food for thought.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I realised I've said more than a few words now, so I better sign off! Have a lovely rest of the week!</span></div>

It's been a while since I've updated and there are so many things I want to share with you! But firstly, happy 2018! Another year, another set of adventures. It's been quite busy over the past few weeks with New Years and Christmas and all. I finally had some time to sit down and spare a few moments to share with you some photos of my favourite spots and moments from my Europe trip back in November/December. Let's start with Rome...<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Before the trip, Italy wasn't the place I was most excited to visit. But thinking back to it now, I think Rome (and Florence) ended up being one my favourite places to experience. I miss walking through the cobblestone streets (even though they weren't too kind to my suitcase) and discovering beautiful nooks and alleyways with every turn. I miss the narrow streets of earth-toned apartment homes with their cute shutter windows. I miss walking through the city, turning a corner and finding the Colosseum or Pantheon just there in front of you.<br />
<br />
We also visited other tourist points that I haven't shown - like inside the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (the monument for Italy's first king) but I feel like my photos won't justify the magnitude of these places. You really have to be there to appreciate (and be in awe) of their magnificence.<br />
<br />
From the grand monuments to the details of their architecture, there is so much to take in and appreciate about the city. Rome is a very impressive city with a very impressive history. I hope that one day, if you haven't already, you will be able to experience Rome for yourself and understand why it's so special. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
In one month's time, I will be in Europe. I will be walking around the streets of Rome in my winter layers, maybe on our way to the Colosseum or a quaint Italian cafe for a warm cuppa...the options are open. It's still a bit unreal to say that that is where I'll be in four weeks time. As per the itinerary above, we will be starting off in Italy and then making our way up to Netherlands and Germany. There are so many things I'm excited for in each of the cities - Italy for their pastries, pasta and gelato; Amsterdam for the river walks, bike rides and scenic-scapes; and from what I've heard, Berlin is just going to be good (or should I say <i>gut...</i>hah) no matter what we do.<br />
<br />
It will be the first time I will be travelling to Europe and travelling overseas without family. I have heard a lot about Europe from my sister who has had her fair share of travelling over the past decade and I hoped to one day experience it for myself.<br />
<br />
I'm very excited to document the trip and you can probably expect several new entries in the travel journal on this blog when I come back. I didn't really do a really great job in documenting my Japan trip last year but I'm hoping to spend my summer holiday making an effort in editing and organising a folio of memories to remember the trip by.<br />
<br />
Besides travelling, I'm very looking forward to end of the year. Many of my friends will be graduating and some family will be coming over from Hong Kong, so much celebrating is expected. December is one of my favourite months and I have a feeling it will be a fun one again this year. Now, it's just four more weeks of work between me and a few wonderful weeks in Europe. The countdown begins!<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh783_BxuVq-a5SOOCpbq3G2ccHU13szOMYNyNZwN30MXID-7546KBnFT_wSjyMgxsQfnf4wCXLIr1AAgz_RuiEBLsHmIsJXo8P-Mwczh_zQBcSuxfi5OLewSY6PnhfN5Fbp7n7_PWAavi1/s1600/IMG_0034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh783_BxuVq-a5SOOCpbq3G2ccHU13szOMYNyNZwN30MXID-7546KBnFT_wSjyMgxsQfnf4wCXLIr1AAgz_RuiEBLsHmIsJXo8P-Mwczh_zQBcSuxfi5OLewSY6PnhfN5Fbp7n7_PWAavi1/s640/IMG_0034.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_2103711596"></span><span id="goog_2103711597"></span><br />
I'm back with some favourites! This one is a bit of a mixed bag and I'm pretty excited about some of them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. <b>iPad Pro</b>. I had been mulling over a drawing tablet vs. iPad Pro for over a year now. I had been wanting to draw things digitally and to write over my photos but didn't have the medium for it. And then, on one Friday night, I decided to go to the Apple store to "have a look at the iPad Pro" and...I caved in. The purchase hurt a little bit but it has been worth the investment. I've mainly been using the app 'Procreate' to sketch and draw over photos; I'm still experimenting with all of its different functions but it has definitely made sketching and digital sharing a lot easier.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. <b>Skarsta standing desk</b>. This has been something that's also been long time coming. My back is prone to getting sore from sitting too long because of my scoliosis. A standing desk seemed to be a good alternative to alleviate this problem. This particular standing desk is from IKEA and it's a manual one that has a handle that lets you wind the table up and down accordingly.<br />
<br />
Some food favourites:<br />
3. <b>Connoisseur - Murray River Salted Caramel with Macadamia ice cream sticks</b>. There are few ice cream flavours that I would dub as one of my favourites (I take my ice cream flavours very seriously), but this one definitely deserves a top spot on my list. It is on the sweeter side but the nutty macadamia can balance out the sweetness a bit.<br />
<br />
4. <b>Dark chocolate maltesers</b>. I'm not usually one for dark chocolate, so discovering that I preferred dark chocolate maltesers over milk chocolate maltesers surprised me. I found that with it being dark chocolate, it means that it's less sweet...which means you can eat more of it without getting sick of the sweetness (and who can complain about that?).<br />
<br />
Music:<br />
5. <b>Dean Lewis</b>. I had the chance to see the "Waves" singer in a gig last month and I'd say he's one of those artists who sounds better live than in recording. He has this very full-bodied voice that just makes your insides melt. He was also kind enough to join us in the crowd after the gig to do a meet and greet. On the topic of music, another artist who I've been enjoying is <i>I Know Leopard (</i>particularly '<i>Let Go', 'Spaceships', 'Rather Be Lonely'). </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
Skincare:<br />
6. <b>Nip + Fab</b>. I was introduced to this brand by a friend after expressing to her my frustration about my white/blackheads around my T-zone. I've always been bad at knowing what the ingredients in products do and which ones would be good for what I need. I decided on the Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads and the Glycolic Fix Overnight Purifying Gel. After using these products for a few days, I had already noticed that a lot of my stubborn whiteheads around my nose had gone and my skin felt a lot more soft and smooth.<br />
<br />
7. <b>Loreal Pure Clay Mask - Exfoliate + Smooth</b>. The reason for purchasing this was mostly because I was constantly seeing ads in Instagram about these new clay masks Loreal was producing. I decided to try one out and because I seemed to be going on a theme of 'exfoliation', I got the red algae one which is supposedly good to get rid of uneven/dead skin and give back your a "glow". Surprisingly enough, I have noticed a brighter and clearer complexion - maybe from a combination of this mask and the Nip + Fab products.<br />
<br />
8. <b>My "grandpa" pants</b>. This is probably my favourite-ist thing over the past few months. I call them my grandpa pants because of the pattern and its slouchy silhouette. They're a purchase from Kmart from a while back when I was in need of a pair of comfy pants, and this pair ticks all the boxes. I mostly wear them at home or to places wear I'm not seeing many people, but they can also definitely be worn with a tucked in top and some Birks/sandals for a super casual look.<br />
<br />
(Also, shoutout to my new banner! I thought it was time to get some new jars. Sketched by yours truly using Procreate).<br />
<br /></div>

<br />
Oh hi. It's been a while. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Remember how in my last post I said I was still waiting for a job? Well, the wait is over. God has graciously provided me with a full-time Speech Pathologist position at a school. Ever since starting work (about two months ago), the days and weeks have just flown by. It's pretty unbelievable that we are already more than halfway through the year. It seemed like only a few days ago where I flipped my calendar into June (but we're already in August?!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Blogging has been very sporadic this year. The past half of the year has lacked routine and I had been spending most of my time trying to find my feet as a newbie out of uni. Now that things have settled down a little bit, I thought I would provide an update on my new job and other things that I have been up to during the past few months that I have been away from my blog. (Just a forewarning, it's quite a wordy post).<br />
<br />
After graduation, I had an inkling of where I wanted and didn't want to work. I was certain I would steer away from working in a school setting. But God is full of surprises and he has placed me in (you guessed it)...a school. I landed the job after one of my friends from uni messaged me about a school in Logan looking for a Speech Pathologist to join their team. Her uncle is the head of college so she had this information hot off the press. They've never had a Speech Pathologist before and I would be first and only one. Knowing that I would be a sole Speech Pathologist and also the role being in a school setting, I was hesitant. Ideally, I wanted to work alongside other Speech Pathologists so they could offer me advice and guidance as a new graduate. But I decided to take a leap whilst making sure I would be proactive in looking for mentorship from other sources. I also told myself that even though it wasn't my "dream" setting to work in, I knew that I would grow to love it.<br />
<br />
I was quietly anxious about it all but after the first few days, some of the anxiety was dampened by how caring and welcoming everyone was. I got asked how I was finding things by at least one person each day and just as I thought I could quietly integrate myself into the community, someone wrote a huge welcome message on the whiteboard in the staff lunchroom for all to see. And just in the first month of working, there were three surprise parties for several staff members and it just showed me how generous and thoughtful this community that I had found myself in was.<br />
<br />
Being the first and only Speech Pathologist meant that I had to lay the groundwork for basically everything. I had to order a whole lot of resources, set up a referral system for teachers, create alternate ways of doing things while I waited for resources to come, learn the existing system of how things operated and figure out how I could integrate into it...it all seemed like an overwhelming task. And while I still have many moments where I doubt myself and feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, it's been a great learning curve and I am feeling more and more comfortable and confident each day that I am there.<br />
<br />
After spending more than a month assessing students and developing resources, I was finally able to start my therapy groups last week (yay!). Currently, I am working with students from Prep to Year 3 and boy, has it been interesting (and cute). Little people have such interesting and surprising things to say sometimes. My favourite part is getting random hugs and 'hi's from some of them throughout the day. Some also think I'm one of the Chinese teachers so I get a few "ni hao"s from time to time which is quite hilarious.<br />
<br />
Working has sapped most of my energy nowadays but there have been pockets of time and weekends where I was able to kick back and do things I love. I was lucky enough to have a few days off during the school holidays to visit a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/hunterandscoutgraceville/">new brunch spot</a>, explore the quaint suburb of Graceville (from where the above photo was taken) and revisit a childhood memory of <a href="https://theceramichouse.studio/">painting a pot</a>. I also visited the Etsy markets yesterday and seeing creators and their handmade goods always tickles my itch of wanting to create my own goods. But alas, that day is yet to come.<br />
<br />
It has also been a month of new music, with Oh Wonder releasing their second album (which I fall in love with a bit more every time I listen to it) and Yoste hosting their first official gig - which I was so glad I could be there for! I was very impressed by their opening act as well (i.e. T Scarlett).<br />
<br />
I think I have officially broken my record of most words in a post, and with that said, I should probably stop it here. Hopefully I can provide another post soon :)<br />

It's been a while since I have done a more casual and candid post where I updated this space with all the bits and pieces that I have been up to over the past few months. I was scrolling through my camera roll and it was flooded with so many photos of all the food, events, and odd moments that have made this 'in between study and work' period of my life more bearable and enjoyable. Here are some of the snapshots that I've plucked from my photo album: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij4tavYVXso6iWgRuNMTgirhoL3KUzChzK4sz8ya6DgKpTEayujbHC7CBzGUiDWAYKYg8TMgO4H0bUSKok-wPtLbb3iByv9E_2DPDvIIP-spd15M8MldJMOg_EC5m8CgxxSvCNJw7JWN3k/s1600/nook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij4tavYVXso6iWgRuNMTgirhoL3KUzChzK4sz8ya6DgKpTEayujbHC7CBzGUiDWAYKYg8TMgO4H0bUSKok-wPtLbb3iByv9E_2DPDvIIP-spd15M8MldJMOg_EC5m8CgxxSvCNJw7JWN3k/s640/nook.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I discovered and visited a lot of small boutiques and thrift stores last month in West End. <i><a href="https://www.nookbrisbane.com/">Nook</a></i> was one that I particularly enjoyed. It resides in a small and humble cottage in an unexpected spot and showcases products by small businesses, ranging from hand-made jewellery to quirky cards, vintage clothing and tea. They also have a resident cat that you might find napping by the window. Doesn't that all just sound like the perfect little shop? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjht84DJgd_IgiJQsdY1IYEeIxl6BjXMOuyoiasiB2PbI0YDpU4Y9gOh4xIrU5t850v0Ouptnhh2TqmnQknBvPp0-Kkh1Ld7VTAChMDIu10RlPxLTuP6E0mlqGtTnPNlX3HVXRFmPeRr7A9/s1600/brunch+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="853.333" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjht84DJgd_IgiJQsdY1IYEeIxl6BjXMOuyoiasiB2PbI0YDpU4Y9gOh4xIrU5t850v0Ouptnhh2TqmnQknBvPp0-Kkh1Ld7VTAChMDIu10RlPxLTuP6E0mlqGtTnPNlX3HVXRFmPeRr7A9/s1600/brunch+.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I also visited quite a few new cafes and food spots over the past months, including Miss Bliss Whole Foods Kitchen who were the ones who made the beautiful plate of food that you can see above. Other top spots included <a href="http://nodo.com.au/">Nodo</a>, Campos Coffee, <a href="http://www.thejampantry.com.au/menu/">The Jam Pantry</a>, <a href="http://smokedpaprika.com.au/portfolio-2/">Smoked Paprika</a>, <a href="http://www.claycoffee.com.au/">Clay Coffee</a> and <a href="http://www.smugfig.com/menu/brunch-menu/">The Smug Fig</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My friend, Jewel, bought me tickets to see Vallis Alps for my birthday. It was the first time I had been to a small gig in the valley. I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved every bit of it. I walked out of it very sweaty, with my heart pounding and very much in love with the idea of small intimate gigs. And I'm so glad Vallis Alps was the first to break my dry spell of small gigs.</div>

For my 23rd birthday this year, some of my girlfriends and I went to Kith 'n' Chow for a Sunday lunch. I had never been before but have heard good things about it, especially the platter (featured above). Although we were hijacked by many flies during the meal, all the food was well made and it's close and convenient location makes it a place I would love to visit again. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizjz69FAPj6KMcC7tK2rGbp_FdZ1ECtohqHIMuIyI_Exz9U304JRDZdiFaEBePp5EiSQdgXJetUPvRJUblSXZmMTXWT3Y5bSosXAHj7ZqcHW4RSSuinnLJpPbzfjK9oKqqBCpK941ngf79/s1600/workshop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="853.33" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizjz69FAPj6KMcC7tK2rGbp_FdZ1ECtohqHIMuIyI_Exz9U304JRDZdiFaEBePp5EiSQdgXJetUPvRJUblSXZmMTXWT3Y5bSosXAHj7ZqcHW4RSSuinnLJpPbzfjK9oKqqBCpK941ngf79/s1600/workshop.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
There was a moment in April where I was on a bit of an adventurous, creative and inspired streak. A product of that was me signing up to a polymer bead jewellery workshop on a Sunday afternoon. I had seen so many polymer bead necklaces on Etsy and at markets that I decided I wanted to know how to make them for myself. Attending a workshop was another 'first' for me and it was such a relaxing time (maybe rolling beads and kneading play dough-like clay has something to do with it). It's definitely something fun to do with your mum or your girlfriends. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzFRl7H1jSUH5RKQSvmd6-o2rSQrWvkN_YOJLiNFN6qPJqoitBqvk4eJHM7JK_Yr95-FGgFFwl0XdHSlNrhlFnUCbmvRGYCxGzwU5g0fQtZtdkPqFGZL1OGybVnU9hycPaQg6YTO-GpE4H/s1600/maleny.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="853.33" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzFRl7H1jSUH5RKQSvmd6-o2rSQrWvkN_YOJLiNFN6qPJqoitBqvk4eJHM7JK_Yr95-FGgFFwl0XdHSlNrhlFnUCbmvRGYCxGzwU5g0fQtZtdkPqFGZL1OGybVnU9hycPaQg6YTO-GpE4H/s1600/maleny.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
At the end of April, Daniel and I did a double-date day trip to Maleny. It was something that had been on our "to-do" list for a while and we finally found a day during the uni holidays where all of us were free. There were a few spots that I wanted to visit, including this really cute and rustic and everything-that's-in-it-is-perfect-and-charming cafe called Shotgun Espresso. It didn't disappoint. What was disappointing about the day was that it was bloody windy and cold which resulted in 3/4 of us getting the sniffles. But all in all, a drive to a quaint little town with fun company always guarantees a good time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I chopped half of my hair off! My friend asked me to accompany her to get a haircut and I left with one too. Well...okay, I sort of planned it but I didn't plan how much to cut off. I found this google image of a nice short hair cut, showed it to the lady and I walked out with this^. It has taken me a while to get use to it and I can't tie up my hair without strands of hair falling out...but after buying some styling mousse and doing some trials with a hair curler, I think I finally know how to style this mop. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Other highlights from the past few months included:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Eating my first (and probably last) HSP. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Going the daunting process of job interviews. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Celebrating one-year with the boy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Further developing my small business idea.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Attending a weekly AUSLAN community class to learn sign language.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. Seeing Adele and being charmed by her candid British-ness.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
7. Rock climbing and meeting so many new friends.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
8. Making some pretty smashing white chocolate mocha macarons. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Even though there has been tough patches during the past few months where I would feel listless and pitiful, I have been thankful for the time that I have to invest in other people and my other interests (while also applying for every suitable job that is posted). I have to be constantly reminded of God's sovereignty and to trust in His timing. The wait may seem endless but so are His provisions.<br />

I didn't mean to lure you in with a clickbait heading but it's getting late and I really didn't know what else to call this post. As I'm nearing another year older, I thought it was a fitting time to do some reflection on some things that I have learnt over the past year from my readings, conversations with friends and personal reflection. Here are four things:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>1. Venting can be a form of complaining incognito. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was a period of time where a lot of my conversations was filled with "venting". Then, I realised that many of my words were not very helpful or encouraging at all. What I thought was harmless venting was actually complaining and it was just clouding my mind with negativity and cynicism. Same goes with getting caught up with other people's "venting". This <a href="http://www.projectinspired.com/how-to-worship-god-in-everyday-life/">article</a> sums it up perfectly: "Science has even proven that 'venting' doesn't actually fix anything - instead, it ingrains negative thought patterns into your brain and actually heightens negative emotions. Complaining doesn't help you and it certainly doesn't help your listeners!" I have definitely learned to think before I speak and become more wary of how I respond to people's "venting". </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>2. God isn't going to tell you what He plans for your life. So stop asking and waiting. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This one blew my mind a little. For a lot of my life I had been asking questions like "Does God want me to do this?", "Is this where God wants me to be?", "What should I do next?" And for the most part, I would be incredibly hesitant when making decisions or was afraid that if I took a wrong step, I might veer off the path He wanted me to be on. I've always known that He has a plan for me. But I've learned that it's not our job to figure it out. I've been reading a book by Kevin DeYoung that has been very helpful and I wanted to share a bit from it: "The problem is we think He's going to tell us the wonderful plan before it unfolds. We feel like we can know - and need to know - what God wants every step of the way. But such preoccupation with finding God's will, as well-intentioned as the desire may be, is more folly than freedom. The better way is the biblical way: Seek first the kingdom of God, and trust that He will take care of our needs, even before we what they are and where we're going." We can afford to take risks in life because God doesn't. He already knows what's going to happen.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>3. A presumptuous mind is never helpful.</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I usually give people the benefit of the doubt but from time to time, I can be quite sensitive and take things the wrong way even if the person didn't mean it that way. I think this can happen quite often with online conversations where you can misjudge the tone of voice and for people who tend to read between the lines. I also sometimes find myself overgeneralising things people do and blurt out statements like "you <i>always..." </i>when in reality, they might have only done it once. It can create this false impression of the person that they're a certain type or assume their actions before they've already done it. It breaks down trust and potentially friendships. And that's never a happy ending.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>4. You can love someone without liking them. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is probably the toughest lesson and a lesson that I am still learning. It goes against the grain of what most people believe and it can be quite controversial in the way that people may argue "Why should I love someone who irritates me? I don't need to be nice to them if they're not nice to me." And while it's much easier to love someone you also like, there is something radical about loving a person you dislike. It is something that was shown to us by God. We reject and rebel against Him and yet He loves us. He provided a way out of the mess we had created for ourselves through Jesus. Free of charge too. It changed the game completely. And so would showing undeserved love to someone who you would usually turn your back to. Of course, it's easier than done. But it can be, with much patience and prayer. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I realise that I have only scraped the surface on these four things and I could probably do separate posts for each of them if I wanted to. I'm sure as I'm still growing through these and learning more 'life lessons', I'll have plenty more thoughts to share. In the meantime, my birth<strike>day</strike>week begins tomorrow and I am very excited to (low-key) celebrate with family and friends. Photos to come soon!</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm back with some recent favourites! These are some of the things that I have been enjoying during the past few months: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. <i>Banh Mi from Scotts Road Deli and Takeaway</i>. This is hands down the best Banh Mi that I have eaten. I ordered the Vietnamese roast pork one and the pork was juicy, the bread wasn't too chewy, all the ingredients were fresh, and the pork crackle was on point. Best of all, it only cost $5! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. <i>UQ Alumni t-shirt</i>. Over-sized, soft and perfect for lounging. What more do you want from a shirt?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. <i>Pentel Touch brush pen</i>. This has been my go-to for lettering or doing any fancy headings. The brush tip is very easy to manipulate to get all those smooth transitions between thin and thick. You can find it at Officeworks for $3.10!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. <i>Australian Open</i>. That mens' finals with Federer vs. Nadal though. SO. INTENSE.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. <i>Gippsland mango and blood orange yoghurt</i>. You have to try it to believe how good it is. And the last time I checked, it's currently on sale at Coles! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. <i>Crank rockclimbing</i>. I've been religiously going to rockclimbing every week for the past month now. This has been mostly motivated by a 10-pass coupon that a group of my friends and I got from Groupon (otherwise, it's quite expensive to go) and even after going a few times, I've already been seeing my overall body strength improve. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
7. <i>Ed Sheeran's music comeback</i>. I think you can be one of two different people: those who are still jamming to 'Shape of You' whenever it comes on the radio, or those who switch stations and get annoyed when that station is also playing the same song. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm still the former hehe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
8. <i>Gilmore Girls</i>. I could probably dedicate a whole blog post about Gilmore Girls but I will withhold myself. I feel like I had been vicariously living a Gilmore Girl life for the past few months as I watched from Season 1 all the way to the new revival. The withdrawal symptoms were quite real when it was all over.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
9. <i>Black Mirror</i>. After Gilmore Girls, I didn't know where to turn to. I was recommended Black Mirror and although it's not my usual genre of choice, I really enjoyed it. It's a very suspenseful, thrilling and intriguing show. Each episode is a new story with a new cast but they all have the running theme of technology in the modern world and the uneasy and unsettling side of it that we often don't see. Definitely one to check out!</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hygge. (pronounced <i>hue-gah)</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I came across this Danish word a few weeks ago. It was briefly mentioned but the idea of it intrigued me. I filed that word in my memory and Googled it when I got back home. I immediately fell in love with the concept and realised it was the word that I had always been looking for to describe those little pockets of time that I so treasured. Those moments of stillness when you're sitting alone admiring a view or cozied up in a blanket cocoon with a book or TV show. Or those moments when you're with some of your favourite people doing nothing but talking and enjoying the little things...The moments that leave you feeling warm, at peace and smiling on the inside. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There is no English word equivalent to hygge and we can only attempt to explain the moments that creates it. Hygge is not so much one 'thing' but more of a philosophy or practice that preaches the importance of simplicity, slowing down and creating special out of the ordinary with company and things that you love. Many have used the example of curling up in front of the fireplace with a book, knitted blanket and a mug of something steaming (and this is what you can see if you Google hygge and look at images). This particular scenario is probably more relevant in the country of the word's origin where this concept of hygge is embedded in the Scandinavian culture. Perhaps it has some relation to how the Danish are statistically the happiest population in the world. It might also explain why the aesthetics of IKEA have always been so inviting and pleasing to the eye.<br />
<br />
Hygge seems to be branching out to the rest of the world where the idea of 'less is more' is becoming more attractive and the desire to find peace amongst chaos is ever present. Candles, minimalistic design and those coveted <a href="http://instagram.com/ohhio">super chunky knitted blankets</a> have come into play - all of which aim to create hygge in your life.<br />
<br />
I have always found the idea of retreat and rest important. As an introvert, time alone<br />
to recharge is very precious to me. And I thought adopting a few ways to create hygge might make the recharge time extra rewarding.<br />
<br />
1. <i>Technology free time. </i>Imagine that in today's world. People might think you're actually crazy if you don't have your head in Facebook, Instagram or the likes. A detox from all of that might be good from time to time. Take your eyes of the screen and appreciate your surroundings.<br />
<br />
2. <i>Creating a space that is rid of any work.</i> Someone from some time ago once told me that you shouldn't make your bedroom your workspace because a resting space shouldn't be mixed with feelings of stress from work. While I fail at this and use my bedroom for both rest and work, I can imagine finding a space that is purely dedicated for rest and slowing down recuperating for the soul.<br />
<br />
3. <i>Creating warmth by playing with your senses.</i> While candles and fairy lights seem really cliche and overused nowadays, I do believe they can transform a space into a more inviting and warm one. If you add some friends into that equation, you've got yourself a pretty hygge-ish hang out. (Never enough excuses to whip out those lights, am I right?)<br />
<br />
4. <i>Decluttering.</i> Minimalism is in and all the things that just take up space <strike>is</strike> should be thrown out.<br />
<br />
5. Maybe buy that pillow, throw or chunky knit blanket that you've been eyeing...It's a wonder what being in wrapped a blanket cocoon can do to you.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As always, the start of a new year calls for some reflection. So this is me trying to reflect on the year that was. But honestly, I'm having a little trouble putting thoughts into words and words onto paper. Anyhow, here's my meagre attempt in putting together something worth reading. I'm a little rusty, forgive me.<br />
<br />
2016 was a year of discovery, frustrations, perseverance, questioning and accomplishments. It felt like the year started and finished before I could even have my feet firmly planted on the ground.<br />
<br />
The year started off with a trip to Japan and Hong Kong, and continued with the ups and downs of my final year at university. There were also many tests and disputes between friendships around me, through which I learned how hard it actually is to be diplomatic and patient. I also learned my limits and experienced the emotional consequences of spreading myself too thin. I definitely juggled many responsibilities and duties last year but I don't regret any of them. I loved being able to serve at church and being there for friends in times of need and being able to have the time to study God's word every Monday and Thursday night, whilst trying to stay on top of all my uni studies.<br />
<br />
Speaking of friends, I am so grateful for all the new and old friendships that I was able to build and strengthen throughout the year. The mutual support and encouragement that I was able to witness and experience with others was unreal and something that just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, you know? No matter how turbulent things got, there was always the shoulder of a friend to keep my steady.<br />
<br />
Now that I have officially finished my studies, it has left me experiencing a Rory Gilmore moment. That moment in season 7 when she's standing in the bathroom with newly dyed pink hair and she's looking into the mirror and then the fact suddenly dawns on her that she's graduating and now she feels like she's standing on the edge of the cliff looking out into a huge, foggy abyss. I hear you girl, I totally hear you.<br />
<br />
I am now officially an unemployed adult and there is no certainty of a job in sight. And while the thought of having to find a job plus all the added responsibilities and pressures scares me, I have learned to not think ahead of myself too much and to trust in God's timing and plan for me. Many of my friends have also reassured me that there is actually no rush in finding a full time job and that I should enjoy my break the best I can.<br />
<br />
In one of my previous posts, I mentioned a few ambitions I had after graduation. While they still stand, I think they are proving to be more difficult to complete than anticipated. Everything just feels like loose pieces of a puzzle which makes up a bigger picture I cannot see just yet. But I know that with time and patience, all the pieces will slowly fall into place and the greater picture will become clearer to me.<br />
<br />
I anticipate 2017 to be another year of new experiences, growth and discovery. No doubt there will be many challenges, trials and setbacks but they are never the end of the world. And if 2017 is anything like 2016, it will fly by without my noticing.<br />
<br />
Since I usually develop some sort of mantra or goals for the new year, I thought this year will be no different. So I played with alliteration and came up with these three things:<br />
<br />
1. Plan more: to be productive and disciplined in the things I want to do.<br />
2. Play more: to not take life so seriously sometimes and take on more adventures and new experiences.<br />
3. Pray more: to submit all things to God who is the only one who knows what this year will hold.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's to another blank canvas waiting to be filled with the new year.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11 </i></div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And here it is. My very long overdue video from my Japan trip at the beginning of the year. My mum and I travelled to Japan for 10 days, exploring Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The video is just a few snippets and highlights from our wanderings :)</div>

<br />
Last week marked the end of my university degree. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
The idea still makes my head spin a little bit. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I won't be starting a new semester after holidays like I have been for the past 5 years, but I will be a...working adult (whaaat?!). Over the past week, I have been met with questions of "How is the job search going?", "Have you got anything lined up?", "What are you plans for the holidays?" While some of my friends have exciting and solid answers to those questions, my answers seem a little lacklustre: "I'm not too sure", "I don't have any jobs lined up", "I haven't started looking for jobs yet", "I think I'm just going to take it easy for a while and gradually get into jobs and see what comes up."<br />
<br />
Unlike many of my friends whose sole goal is to find a job next year, my mind is torn between several ideas. Finding a job and working is definitely one of them, but I also have ideas that have been put on the back burner during the past couple of years because I had wanted to focus on my studies in the meantime. But now that I seemingly have an endless holiday, I am hoping to start the ball the rolling with some of these ideas.<br />
<br />
The first idea is to learn sign language. During one of our subjects last year, we had the chance of learning key word sign. Ever since that experience, I have wanted to take it a step further and learn more about sign language. I thought that it would be a great addition to my set of skills if I ever find myself working with people with disability or a hearing impairment, and it can even be a great tool for ministry.<br />
<br />
The second idea is taking a few subjects at bible college. It has always been a thought at the back of my mind since graduating from high school. I still remember the moment when I was strolling through QUT Kelvin Grove with my mum for open day in 2011 talking about my future options and I told her that I might even go to bible college instead of university. I guess the idea has stuck with me until now. I'm not really sure about the logistics of fitting in classes within my schedule if I'm also planning to work but I'm sure God will provide a way for things to work out if He wills. <br />
<br />
Lastly, but probably the most ambitious idea, is to start my own little business selling paper goods. This idea came about a year or so ago when I dipped my toes into the world of lettering and sketching. I had started following more and more artists who were owners of their small business and I became very inspired by them. I know I have still a long way to go with this idea and my creative art skills have a lot of dusting off to do, but it's a project that I think will be a proud accomplishment if it ever comes to fruition.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, I have many smaller projects to tick off the list before the year ends, such as catching up on blog posts, making my 2017 calendar, selling clothes at markets and my Japan trip vlog that is nearly a year overdue. (Watch this space!)<br />

Hi there. I realised I was a bit overzealous in my last post and probably underestimated the spiral of work I would fall into in the first few weeks of semester two (typical me). What can I say, it's been a heck of ride thus far. At one point, I swear it was going to be death by group meetings. They just never seemed to end. But alas, I have been able to surface from the tide of projects that we have been inundated with to take a momentary breather. And it is during this fraction of free-time that I bring you this post. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This post is a bit of a hybrid. It's more or less a 'favourites' post, including some things that I particularly liked during the past months, with an update of what's been going on in my life sprinkled through. So let's go:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. <i>Birkenstocks</i>. Yes, I gave in to the trend. But think what you will, because I have no regrets. Once you go Birk, you can never go back. They did burn a hole in my wallet a bit but I thought they would be a good investment considering the quality of the shoes. They offer such good support for your feet (they literally hug your foot) and are so convenient to just slip on when you really can't be bothered deciding what to wear. Also, shoutout to the girl who helped me when buying these Birks - she was very comprehensive and careful in providing me advice and tips for choosing the size and caring for shoes. And to my boyfriend, who patiently waited as I circled the store a countless number of times trying to decide the better fit. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. <i>Tuzki</i>. If you don't know who Tuzki is, go to your Facebook chat and look in your stickers store. I'm pretty sure Facebook stickers and memes were the only things that kept us sane (or started our insanity) throughout all the group meetings and correspondence on Facebook. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. <i>Breakfast bagels</i>. My love for bagels was reignited when I visited Scout Cafe with a friend last month. I love most breakfast bagels but this one was quite a standout. I can't even remember what was in it but it definitely made an impression on me. Definitely something I'm putting on my list to go back to.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. <i>Apple Music</i>. I joined Apple Music a few months back as part of a family plan with a few friends. I'm not completely sure of the reason I joined, considering I was pretty happy with Spotify (except for the ads). But after settling in to using Apple Music, it's pretty great. Despite me having to pay $3/month, it's definitely worth having the ad-free music. On the topic of music, I discovered some new artists last month that I particularly liked: SG Lewis, Zak Abel, Glass Animals and James TW. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. <i>Volleyball</i>. Every Saturday night, some church and other friends play a few hours of volleyball. I've always missed playing volleyball since high school so I was quite excited to be able to play again and on a regular basis. It's also quite a nice break from doing projects all day and being able to see some friends who I don't get to see too often. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. <i>Sweet friends</i>. I've had a fair few coffee chats and bump-ins with friends over the past month and the results of those always left a smile on my face. I am very thankful for all the friends that God has placed in my life; some of which I sometimes like to consider as extended family.<br />
<br />
<br />
Now playing: <i>4U (Acoustic) - Blackbear</i> </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hi there. It's me. Yes, it's been a while since my last visit here. Although you might not have missed my presence, I have certainly missed doing posts. The past two and a half months have been a busy time and it feels like a lot has happened, both good and not so good. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Where do I even begin? </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, there was firstly my six week block placement back in April/May which was quite a hectic and tough experience. I was definitely stretched and tested a lot more than I have been previously. Then came exams..(I don't need to explain the pains of exam block, do I?) On top of that, there were many other commitments to activities, responsibilities and my altruistic nature drove me to take on more relational issues involving my friends and family than I should have. All of this sort of made me tumble into a bit of an emotional mess and left me feeling uninspired and unmotivated. Inspiration and motivation does not come very easily. And especially after an extended period of time when you have not exercised those creative muscles. But I think I am slowly getting over this hump and am ready to get the creative juices flowing again. So consider this as sort of a 'comeback' post, with the expectation of more things to come attached.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
See you here again soon. </div>
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Three. Also the last full day we were spending in Tokyo. There is seriously so much to explore in Tokyo and we really struggled to choose what we must see within the limited time we had. The Studio Ghibli Museum was a no-brainer though. I remember 'Totoro' and 'Laputa' were childhood favourites and I wasn't about to miss out on the opportunity to check out what the museum had to show. Visitors aren't allowed to take photos inside the museum; but for good reason, because the artwork and animation is absolutely amazing and wasn't something that should be shared outside of the space. I walked out of there knowing that I wouldn't be able to see anything like that anywhere else in the world. It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next stop was Meiji Jingu. This is a shrine that is located right next to the train station and busy city streets; but as you walk further in, you are gradually engulfed by the forest and all the city sounds are muffled by the rustling of leaves instead. This was not only a popular spot for tourists, but a place that is frequently visited by locals to pray and pay their respects. It is a truly beautiful place to walk through and you just can't help but to soak in the peaceful atmosphere that the forest scenery seems to emit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our last pitstop for the day was Shibuya. This suburb is well known for two things: the Hachiko statute and the Shibuya crossing. Seeing the Hachiko statute really brought the feels because the movie is probably the only movie to have made me bawl my eyes out so much (but the moment was sightly ruined by the crowd of tourists all wanting to take a photo with it). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Shibuya crossing is apparently one of the busiest crossings in the world and the Starbucks that overlooks the crossing is also dubbed one of the busiest (because all the tourists go up there to watch people cross the intersection). The crossing is a lot smaller than I thought it was...but it sure was busy. You feel a bit frantic trying to cross it and all the while trying to dodge the surge of people coming from the other side. My mum and I decided to join the crowd in the Starbucks overlooking the crossing and it was quite amusing watching tourists trying to take time lapses and selfies in the middle of the crossing. I guess there's no shame when you're a tourist... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We also had two of my favourite meals in Shibuya. The first was at Genki Sushi - which was recommended to me by a friend/fellow Japan enthusiast. I think Genki Sushi can be found in other cities around the world too but being in Japan, they had a different way of serving the sushi to you: you order from a touch screen and a few minutes later, the plate of sushi zooms across a conveyor belt at an unsettling speed to stop in front in you. The Japanese seems to have a contraption for everything and it's all quite fascinating. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second place was a random hotpot place that I found online. I knew that I didn't want to leave Japan without having 'shabu shabu' so I quickly googled 'top hotpot places in Tokyo' and this particular place popped up. And quite conveniently, it was in Shibuya as well. It was definitely not a bad ending to our stay in Tokyo. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next city: Kyoto.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So this post is a bit of an interlude to the Japan Diary. I couldn't really wait until I had finished the Japan diary to post this because I just love the look of this cafe so much that I wanted to share it with the rest of the world. The cafe is called <a href="http://www.morningafter.com.au/#about">Morning After</a>. It's a place at West End that was recommended to me by a friend who said their coffee was pretty top. But as with most cafes, it's usually the decor that is the deciding factor for whether I go or not. And this one definitely did not disappoint in that department. This cafe pretty much ticked everything on the list of "Top Trends in Interior Design 2016" with the popular and classic combination of the wooden, white and concrete surfaces, metallic accents and patches of greenery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Cafe food is typically quite overpriced for the portion size and the expensive price tag is usually only compensated by the presentation of the food and cafe decor. The food that we got was no exception to this. I decided on the carbonara papardelle which was good, but not great. And same goes for the rest of the food that we ordered. So to answer the question, "Would you go again?" I would probably say, "Only for the decor and to sit on their green couches that are oddly comforting to touch."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It seems like mediocre food but excellent decor is the common trend for the cafes that I've been visiting recently. I guess the search for cafes that are able to tick both boxes continues.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the meantime, I am enjoying freedom from an assignment that has been slowly killing us for the past couple of weeks. And as I'm sitting here sipping on a matcha frappe, all I'm thinking is that freedom has never tasted so sweet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Both figuratively and literally. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sorrynotsorry for the bad pun. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the things on our to-do list was to see Mt Fuji. It's probably the most iconic place in Japan and I didn't want to miss out on an opportunity to lay my eyes on this natural wonder of a mountain for myself. After doing some research I was pretty confident that the season we were going was one of the best times of the year to see it. It's always a bit of a gamble with the weather though...and it was just our luck that the day we decided to go was a rainy day. I was still pretty hopeful that it might clear up later in the day and we would still be able to catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji. But alas, I think I was being too optimistic about the weather being on our side because in the end, we weren't able to see a thing through the fog. But nonetheless, we were still able to make a day out of it because the whole area of Kawaguchiko was covered with snow and it was one of the most beautiful and magical thing I have ever seen. Seeing a whole field of snow that was untouched and only a few metres in front of you naturally draws you to run across it. And that was exactly what I did. Who needs to see Mt Fuji when you can stomp around a field of snow instead, right? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mr Fuji is a bit of a way out from Tokyo and we knew we would have to make it a day trip. There are several ways to get there - either by bus or train and both of these require you change stations/stop at least once. We decided on the train because we thought it would be more of a comfortable ride and it was slightly cheaper/faster. So from Shinjuku station, we caught the train to Kawaguchiko station with one transfer at Otsuki station. The whole journey took just over 2 hours, but you're so distracted by the views outside the window that you hardly notice the time passing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There isn't much to do around Kawaguchiko, besides loiter around the lake for a while to admire the serenity of it all and maybe visit an onsen. There are tourist loop buses that can take you around to different pitstops (e.g. museums) around the lake but most of these places were closed/deserted due to the cold weather (I'm sure you could make it a pretty eventful day if the weather was less wet and cold). There is also a ropeway that you can jump on to go up to a lookout which was apparently quite a good vantage point to see Mt Fuji. But of course, we weren't even able to see very far because it was so gloomy.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We arrived back in Tokyo in the evening and decided to head over to Ginza for dinner. That was where I did some damage to my wallet and bought a few items for myself from GU (a shop quite similar to Uniqlo but more hip). And I also had a pretty satisfying bowl of udon at a random shop along the streets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So all in all, it was a pretty top day despite not being able to tick seeing Mt Fuji off the list. But I guess it gives me an excuse to visit Japan again :) </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been a long time coming but I finally found the time the other day to start my Japan diary! There are 9 days altogether and hopefully I will be able to slowly but consistently push each day out (and hopefully it won't take me the whole year to do that haha). Without further ado, here is day one! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We arrived in Shinjuku, Tokyo late on a Thursday evening so we didn't really get to explore much besides walking around the streets close to where we stayed and eating a bowl of ramen for dinner. Our first official day in Japan consisted of a fairly early wakeup to visit the <i>Tsukiji fish market</i>. This market is the one famous for their tuna auctions. But auctions happen very early in the morning and I don't think my mum and I were too keen on waking up at 4am in the morning to watch people buy fish. Instead, we decided to check out the rest of the markets at a more reasonable hour in the morning and enjoyed for ourselves a meal of super fresh sashimi and unagi in a little shop close by the market.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The next stop was the <i>Sensoji Temple</i> - a Buddhist temple in Asakusa. My favourite part was actually the long row of markets (Nakamise shopping street) that lead up to the temple. There were (of course) many tourists which made browsing a little bit hectic but I managed to buy a few souvenirs for my friends and a few nibblies. At a glance, temples are quite ordinary to look at (especially if you've already seen a range from China/Korea) but if you actually stand to admire it for a little while (whilst trying not to be in the way of the surging crowds of people) you really notice that the architecture and embellishments are actually on point.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The black/white/red floral wallet in the photo^ was purchased at the <i>Nakamise shopping street</i>. There are numerous shops selling these little wallets/pouches/coin purses made with the most beautiful Japanese style fabrics. It made making decisions very hard and I remember always thinking to myself "I don't need this, but it's very pretty so I'm going to buy it anyway." Travelling is always the epitome of impulse buys...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The third thing on our itinerary for the day was to visit the <i>Tokyo Skytree</i>. Reaching a height of 634 metres, Tokyo Skytree is the tallest building in Japan. We reached the observation deck in time to watch the sunset which lit up the sky with the most gorgeous hues (man, I love sunsets). At the foot of the tower is a shopping centre where I discovered a shop selling the prettiest rolls of paper (also in the photo above) and other paper goods. So of course, after spending aeons admiring the pretty paper and stationery, I couldn't leave without buying a few rolls (along with some brush pens) for myself. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I recently came back from a trip to Japan and Hong Kong and as you would expect when travelling overseas, the consumption of food was at an all time high. While I was in Hong Kong, I wanted to try something new (besides visiting all my old favourites). I asked my cousin for restaurant recommendations and R&B Research Bakery came up.<br />
<br />
It's described as a Western restaurant, but I wouldn't say that their flavours are entirely Western. I can't exactly remember the name of what we ordered, but I decided on this chicken "sandwich" (which was more of a burger). The chicken was fried and also included some kale and some sort of corn relish all in a honey basted bun. My mum ordered a crab and shrimp noodle dish which I had a bite of. I think I can say that the food was quite mediocre and didn't really quite hit the mark for me. The only thing that made it worth the visit...was probably the window. I just loved the space! I'm not really sure what it is about a space with large industrial windows that really draws me in. I can imagine it to the perfect location to spend a day at, catching up with someone or on some work.<br />
<br />
In other news: I'm still in the process of finding the motivation to sift through all the photos from the tip. But hopefully I can be sharing my Japan photo diary soon :) Watch this space!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Chester Street Bakery has been on my go-to list for a while now because I have heard about it from so many people. Today, my friend and I decided to finally to see what all the fuss was about. After spending like 30 minutes trying to find a park (never again), we were finally rewarded with our lunch there. I ordered the confit ocean trout and my friend ordered the poached eggs, buttered kale, roast pumpkin and serrano ham. The confit ocean trout was very refreshing - perfect for a blistering Summer's day like today. However, with me not being a huge fan of salad and also not expecting it to be a salad, there was a bit of it left untouched. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And since Chester Street is known for their sweets, we couldn't pass without trying one of their cakes. My friend and I decided to try the rainbow layer cake hoping that it would have a slightly lower sugar content compared to some of the other ones that just looked deadly. To our surprise, the icing on the cake was actually a cream cheese and cream frosting, and balanced fairly well with the dense sweetness of the vanilla sponge cake. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm glad I could tick this off my list, but I can't say that I would choose to visit again. It's quite over-rated and over-priced and there are certainly better choices for brunch/lunch and dessert despite it being their speciality. But if you have a strong sweet tooth, you might enjoy your stay there.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next on the list: Mister Fitz's Finest Ice Cream. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now playing: <i>Too Much Time Together - San Cisco </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
So before I begin, I feel like I should explain myself regarding my absence (maybe more for my sake and record) because I think the past seven weeks is probably the longest I have been away from here. I can't say that it was because I was busy with work/study, considering it is now holidays. It was more because I was spending more time experimenting and learning, such as drawing with a graphics tablet, and had started to dabble with drawing and typography more. I'm quite excited to have these extra creative options but I am learning and definitely not up to the stage where I am fluent in using them..which poses my other reason and struggle. Posts became a challenge because I would struggle to decide how I should do it (shout out to my indecisiveness). I had too many ideas and I would never be 100% happy with any of them. But I've done some reflecting and have sorted things out, and I think I'm ready to get back to the grind of blogging again. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Phew. Now that I've got that off my chest, let's start our stroll down memory lane. Shall we? </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
2015. What a good year. It wasn't the best, but it was good. With many lessons learnt resulting in growing thicker skin and experiencing new challenges, it was a year to remember. Here are 10 of my favourite memories from 2015: </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. <u>I went to Melbourne with my best friend</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was my first travel trip that wasn't with my family. As with most travel trips, the idea came about half-jokingly. But I am so glad we pushed away our inhibitions about the trip and went, because it's probably one of my favourite trips I've been on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo09oWy3T-_sRV_QWuCwtuxvldtB8j-BmtTv85Y1N8Lh6oQ3cuv_Y06NUJq4PzuX6_aV297N4AbIwo7iuIW3SFqC_69bmJlQZFiKLTbSSxPrI1wV1bVR0vyUrs8AbX-x37oduCyEyYZ9ib/s1600/A.1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo09oWy3T-_sRV_QWuCwtuxvldtB8j-BmtTv85Y1N8Lh6oQ3cuv_Y06NUJq4PzuX6_aV297N4AbIwo7iuIW3SFqC_69bmJlQZFiKLTbSSxPrI1wV1bVR0vyUrs8AbX-x37oduCyEyYZ9ib/s640/A.1.jpg" width="638" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You can see my vlog of the trip <a href="http://jarsofcolour.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/melbourne-vlog.html">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. <u>Being within 3 metres of Roger Federer</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've always admired the man. But it was always through the TV screen. It was definitely surreal (and such a fluke) seeing him in person.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. <u>I saw two of my favourite artists: Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran live in concert</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Their live performance cannot compare to anything else. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHiHDytp1QzbApHPp1PW-t115cSktyA8Dr-GmXg8FnjuSG-M2N2l8q4xTp6bb7Zmao-Ybt8KbMiKjZbLOC5hor_fVcrCfveUOgxEogY_xE9jIWwJEDNFoW7nSrKGg6dJRVDdWyhnu2pDtF/s1600/IMG_2563.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHiHDytp1QzbApHPp1PW-t115cSktyA8Dr-GmXg8FnjuSG-M2N2l8q4xTp6bb7Zmao-Ybt8KbMiKjZbLOC5hor_fVcrCfveUOgxEogY_xE9jIWwJEDNFoW7nSrKGg6dJRVDdWyhnu2pDtF/s640/IMG_2563.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. <u>My friends got married</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I attended 3 weddings last year. Two of which involved people who have had some influence in my life. It was such a joy being able to celebrate with them on their incredibly special day. The third wedding was also special because it was the first time I played piano for the procession of the bride. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
5. <u>I discovered the wonderful world of donuts in Brisbane</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Doughnut Time, The Doughnut Bar, then the Donut Boyz. There was no stopping me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXpn0ZLbjpULwb50Ec6NOoEcCgnS5PXYYgqZCwKM4zMY2IeGb323IhStiGPdDZOEoMZ-5ieyo7_c3CK8aInk4idnKoq_0GyBDgc46IKTvBD5HGHPb-0qvponKTE3RaI02C_Z8tyJgzvJRK/s1600/IMG_2505.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXpn0ZLbjpULwb50Ec6NOoEcCgnS5PXYYgqZCwKM4zMY2IeGb323IhStiGPdDZOEoMZ-5ieyo7_c3CK8aInk4idnKoq_0GyBDgc46IKTvBD5HGHPb-0qvponKTE3RaI02C_Z8tyJgzvJRK/s640/IMG_2505.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
6. <u>I turned 21</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I went to Stradbroke Island on my birthday. It wasn't even a trip for me and most of the people in our group didn't even know it was my birthday. But that was the way I liked it. After all, being able to spend my birthday with some of my favourite people is what I liked the most. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWQwezXQUtLQTUQoeGzL2oC0vtjRwGpNo3OXYGMrhAdFJ45bWOyGft0HmIbCeU9NIF7ASaMCiOKQEOF0LjakCo3hia9lup67LCttAX2y6wbIND7-53tlMFWc44knwySU9BJNo5kOaAYvVu/s1600/A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWQwezXQUtLQTUQoeGzL2oC0vtjRwGpNo3OXYGMrhAdFJ45bWOyGft0HmIbCeU9NIF7ASaMCiOKQEOF0LjakCo3hia9lup67LCttAX2y6wbIND7-53tlMFWc44knwySU9BJNo5kOaAYvVu/s640/A.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
7. <u>I saw my friends graduate</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Days where I get to celebrate the milestones of my friends are my favourite kind of days. They were also days which I realised that we are all growing up and it will soon be my turn...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKuk-EzNLxXlYv7WziMnJdLsS8MscmXEBVVZGsMpAoZlJglz0wbTwryXzUa9deuwdf12HpDUey8MiqeitZJ9_R2bXR4SO5RzQsHbdmBu45EURimQBTS2FIO_jH7Nmg0CR9CMNX6VfGwLVX/s1600/unnamed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKuk-EzNLxXlYv7WziMnJdLsS8MscmXEBVVZGsMpAoZlJglz0wbTwryXzUa9deuwdf12HpDUey8MiqeitZJ9_R2bXR4SO5RzQsHbdmBu45EURimQBTS2FIO_jH7Nmg0CR9CMNX6VfGwLVX/s640/unnamed.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
8. <u>I volunteered at the Ekka</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Never in my life have I scooped so many balls of ice cream. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLHBo76DMK6Vr5QLbVT8dg-ixGEnNdqchYjfKcsRHFNac7sNbeau0kK2brfpY8KtHtmOWVJaGxWscoFxzH1yjAVRvKFLdosIiheggwxGg2QQoKaaNbfapYkdQi2AEWlpbkFt4nccXR7_9X/s1600/A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLHBo76DMK6Vr5QLbVT8dg-ixGEnNdqchYjfKcsRHFNac7sNbeau0kK2brfpY8KtHtmOWVJaGxWscoFxzH1yjAVRvKFLdosIiheggwxGg2QQoKaaNbfapYkdQi2AEWlpbkFt4nccXR7_9X/s640/A.jpg" width="638" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
9. <u>I went to Mackay for 6 weeks</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This period of time was probably the most memorable of the year. This was the first time I had been away from home on my own for so long. And I had a blast. It was such an eye-opening experience in which I gained more independence, new friends and memories that I will never forget. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjLW7mFYGVQHLseLQCVfZATBsYReKetXIrkSlBvTAfKsFul02Hq8ytkxEjbvWrVIC4wudPOKQylTINOpbUfJ9XAp332radgdxezr7bh4rNbG-PyljUz0dKEkU1YFMrJbRnw3xo42LhS5mw/s1600/A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjLW7mFYGVQHLseLQCVfZATBsYReKetXIrkSlBvTAfKsFul02Hq8ytkxEjbvWrVIC4wudPOKQylTINOpbUfJ9XAp332radgdxezr7bh4rNbG-PyljUz0dKEkU1YFMrJbRnw3xo42LhS5mw/s640/A.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
10. <u>Christmas and New Years</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I celebrated Christmas and New Years with a few dinners, exchanging gifts, a guest appearance from Santa, watching the fireworks from my friend's deck and spending the first few hours of the new year having genuine chats with some of my best friends. No better way to end and start a year, in my opinion. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3fAqTSkpGfPouIi5tQyER6r2OiTFZZEHBJpFe6E-qzZLwa5PigKHRwRAPRi-AdwHhKjnFZSk1G14JlRut5jtCqGZ0yDZ6yURx5fVHt0a1PwprpSjq12rPOo-n6fbmoaDCD1Xh3Kkzn4WG/s1600/B.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3fAqTSkpGfPouIi5tQyER6r2OiTFZZEHBJpFe6E-qzZLwa5PigKHRwRAPRi-AdwHhKjnFZSk1G14JlRut5jtCqGZ0yDZ6yURx5fVHt0a1PwprpSjq12rPOo-n6fbmoaDCD1Xh3Kkzn4WG/s640/B.jpg" width="638" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I know that 2016 will bring as many memories as 2015. There will also be many challenges for sure, but what is a year without a challenge or two? I can only learn and grow from them. This year will be another roller coaster ride.. and I better hold on tight. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFmrlfv0JV8bV5Ycy2yQ4SpC72nyJvygM1dffIvnsTYDT9aOuch8cdEwRrFRjeqcwqWMEB9D8mylvxPx8Cc6o6ad2Q2cn0V0Rv8l9iX4W6ceIVCSWtQexgui9LtC42S-Wk2I9Ins5IQ4fj/s1600/November+Fav.2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFmrlfv0JV8bV5Ycy2yQ4SpC72nyJvygM1dffIvnsTYDT9aOuch8cdEwRrFRjeqcwqWMEB9D8mylvxPx8Cc6o6ad2Q2cn0V0Rv8l9iX4W6ceIVCSWtQexgui9LtC42S-Wk2I9Ins5IQ4fj/s1600/November+Fav.2.jpg" /></a></div>
Here are a few things that made me happy in the month of November:<br />
<br />
1. <i>Maybelline Full 'N Soft Mascara.</i> I never know what make-up products to purchase. The number of products available overwhelms me and I usually buy products on a whim or because of their price. I decided to try this particular mascara because it was waterproof and pretty cheap. I'm no make-up expert but I would say this one does its job well: it doesn't really clump up my lashes but leaves it soft, and it doesn't budge for the whole day.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
2. <i>Frannerd</i>. I've been following Fran ever since Essiebutton introduced her on YouTube. I love her style of illustrations - it's definitely unique, quirky and really fun! Here is her <a href="http://sandianerd.blogspot.com.au/">blog</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/frannerd13">YouTube channel</a> which has some really inspiring and fun content.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. <i>Nivea Body Lotion: Express Hydration</i>. I've had this in my cupboard for a while now but have never used until when I squirted some in a smaller bottle to take with me to Mackay. And that was when I discovered its magical powers in making my skin feel baby smooth. I typically use it after I've taken a shower before I sleep and my skin just feels so soft and smooth the next morning. I have to say, this is the best body lotion I have used.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. <i>Calamine Lotion</i>. This is a bit of a random item. During my outdoor adventures in Mackay (as well as just standing outside whilst on the phone), I got bitten so many times by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes seem to love me...but this love is not reciprocated. Calamine was something that really helped with my itchy bites. It dries a white/ chalky colour so it's probably best used at home, unless you want to walk around in public with patchy spots on your body.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. <i>Brisbane Etsy Made Local markets</i>. I love Etsy and I love markets. So when the two joined forces, it was too good to be true. The markets were held last Saturday at Brisbane City Hall. The turnout for the markets was totally unexpected - there was a 20 minute wait to get inside when I arrived! They had a very good variety of stalls at the markets and many that I haven't seen before. A few of my favourites were <a href="http://foxandfallow.com.au/">Fox & Fallow</a>, <a href="http://timberandco.com.au/">Timber & Co.</a>, and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/UniqueLulu">Unique LuLu</a>.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. <i>Whitsundays</i>. I had forgotten how beautiful this part of Australia is since my visit four years ago. I don't think anything can really compare to Whitehaven beach and the clear blue waters that surrounds it. And snorkelling in the Reef is an unmissable experience. The reef was so beautiful and the fish are not afraid to swim up close. We even saw a turtle! I totally regret not taking my waterproof camera. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Bunker is a place I had wanted to visit for quite some time. Mostly because my friend (featured above) frequently visits the cafe and posts the most beautiful photos of their coffee and interior on her Instagram. Bunker is a whole-in-the-wall type of cafe (hence their name, I presume) and it must be a fairly established place judging from how most of their walls have been swallowed up by a flourish of vines. I really love cafes that make use of plants to create and form their space (just like <a href="http://jarsofcolour.blogspot.com.au/search?q=the+lost+boys">The Lost Boys</a> in the valley) - it's something that really draws me to want to spend my morning or afternoon in. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Bunker's speciality is their coffee. They don't offer food/meals but only a simple cabinet of muffins, croissants and other pastries that seems untouched and forgotten on the side. Despite it being a blistering almost-Summer's day, my friend insisted that I try their hot coffee since it was my first visit. I decided on a mocha - which came in those chic double-walled cups and my friend ordered a cold dark chocolate milk. I really liked the mocha, even though it was more chocolate than coffee. I also tried a bit of the chocolate milk and it was incredibly creamy (something that might not be for everyone's taste).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think I can add Bunker to my list of favourite places to visit. Not just because of their coffee, but for the space and for the fact that when I'm there, it feels like a hiding place that you don't want to share with anyone else. The whole experience is one of a kind. </div>

I mentioned in my previous post that Coco Cubano is very high up on my 'Places to Eat in Mackay' list. So I thought it would be fitting to dedicate a post about it - featuring one of my several visits there.<br />
<br />
My friend and I decided to grab some brunch after church on a Sunday morning. I wasn't really sure what to expect for breakfast. Much of their lunch menu is inspired by Cuban flavours so I was unsure how breakfast would play out. A lot of it is typical of what you find at any other cafe, but you can either do those flavours the right way or just miss the mark. Coco Cubano definitely does not miss the mark with their flavours. And I think the dine-in environment and atmosphere they create really adds to an enjoyable experience every time.<br />
<br />
I ordered "Eggs Your Way" which involved two eggs, with grilled baby spinach, homemade salsa on sourdough toast with extra haloumi (of course). My friend ordered 'A-poach-acado' which was two poached eggs serviced in an avocado drizzled with hollandaise sauce. I'm not sure if I was just particularly hungry, but every bit of it was devoured which usually means that I liked it (except for the salsa. I've never been a huge fan of salsa). Their lunch menu also deserves a big shout-out as well I think, especially their chicken tortilla and pulled beef cheeseburger.<br />
<br />
I'm not sure if I can fit in another visit before I leave next visit, which makes me sad. But alas, all good things must come to an end. I enjoyed it while it lasted :)<br />
